(Confessions of an English teacher: I found this story at Early EFL blog and I have to share it with you because it reminds me of some of my classes.)

(This transcript is true and accurate, however exaggerated it may seem. This happened to me teaching a class with 1º ESO (12 years old) on a Thursday in our 5th period. It is only an example. The student names are fictitious.)

(Okay kids, today we're going to study food words in English. Copy these 5 categories —I wrote them on the board— and write the words that you know in each column.)

Amanda: ¿En inglés?

— Sí, mejor que en ruso, en inglés.

(Yes, better than in Russian, in English.)

Luis: Profe, ¿cuántas categorías?

(Teacher, How many categories?)

— Cinco. Las que hay en la pizarra.

(Five. The ones on the board.)

Luis: A mí no me caben.

(They don't fit.)

— Pues prueba a poner la hoja apaisada.

(Well, try and put the paper in landscape.)

Luis: ¿qué significa 'apaisada'?

(What's 'landscape'?)

— Horizontal, o sea: así —lo demuestro.

(Horizontal, like this — I show him.)

Juan: ¿qué título ponemos?

(What's the title?)

(Try “Food”, as I've written on the board.)

Fran: ¿puedo hacerlo a lápiz?

(Can I do it in pencil?)

— No, no puedes.

(No, you can't. You know that in the notebook we only write with a pen.)

Jessica: ¿Cómo se dice 'pepino'?

(How do you say 'cucumber'?)

(I told you to write the words that you know. Not the ones I know.)

Noel: ¿El huevo es una verdura?

(Is an egg a vegetable?)

— No, no es una verdura.

(No, it's not a vegetable.)

Federico: ¿qué título ponemos?

(What's the title?)

— Lo he dicho ya dos veces.

(I've already told you twice.)

Nieves: ¿Cómo se dice 'calamar'?

(How do you say 'squid'?)

(I told you to write the words that you know. Not the ones that I know.)

Jesús: ¿Hay que escribirlo en el cuaderno?

(Do we have to copy it into our notebook?)

(Unless you prefer writing it on your table...)

Ricardo: Profe, ¿Pero, qué hay que hacer?

(Teacher, what do we have to do?)

(Did you wash your ears out this morning?)

(Can I put 'juice' in the dessert category?)

— Mejor ponlo en la de líquidos.

(Better put it in the liquid category.)

(Can I put 'chicken' in the dessert category?)

— En este continente, no.

(Not in this continent.)

......................................

10 minutos después

(10 minutes later)

— Bueno, ahora vamos a empezar.

(Okay, now we're going to start. Put your hands up and say the words; I'll write them on the board. Let's start with vegetables.)

(10 Kids put their hands up and shout out different vegetables at the same time.)

Broccoli!
Carrots!
Salad!
"Pepination!" (for 'cucumber')
Eggs!

(I told you that eggs are not a vegetable. Please put your hands up and wait for your name before you speak because, I haven't got ten ears to understand you at the same time! Arturo stop passing notes to Maria or else I'll read them to the rest of the class!)

Arturo: ¿Con cuál empezamos?

(Which one are we going to start with?)

— Con las verduras. Empieza tú, Marisol.

(With the vegetables. You start, Marisol.)

(Well, the thing is, I forgot my notebook at home.)

— ¿Y qué llevas haciendo estos 15 minutos, criatura? A ver, hazlo tú, Pepe.

(What have you been doing for the last 15 minutes, poor little thing? Pepe, you do it!)

Pepe: ¿quién, yo?

( Who me?)

(You're the only Pepe in class, aren't you?)

Pepe: Orange

(Put the orange in fruit, please.)

(Teacher, the other day I heard a blue joke, Can I tell it?)

(Even if there are some vegetables involved, no, you can't tell it!)

María: ¿Esto cae en el examen?

(Is this going to be in the exam?)

(Well, maybe you'll get lucky and there won't be an exam as I'll be recovering from this class in a sanatorium.)

Todos: BIEEEEEN!

(Everyone: GREAT!)

(However hard to believe it may seem, sometimes we manage to teach them, and they sometimes manage to learn.)

(Well, it's Friday and I hope you enjoy this wonderful short animation by Ting Sui Lo which shows us that sometimes we only have to open our eyes to see all the beautiful things that are around us, after all.)

¡Feliz fin de semana!

(Have a nice weekend!)
